Wanderers
‘Los Caminantes’ is a transversal, experimental project, which searches for new languages and new ways to transit drama. Written during the National System of Art Creators Grant period in 2014. Since I’ve written it, I’ve always thought I’d like to direct it. I was within a personal and deep crisis during a sabbatical year, in which I devoted myself to writing, as well as working my way up to stage directing.
Now, in 2018, we’ve made the first Artistic Residence produced by the Autonomous Metropolitan University (UAM), in which we’ve been researching visual and theatrical materials, as well as experimenting with them.
In the lost mountains in a world devastated due to violence, where the roads are filled with criminals and Mexico collapses, two indigenous go hunting a deer. One of them, Román, gets stung by a scorpion and enters in a delusional state. He believes a new “conquest” is coming, thus they prepare weapons for the combat. His partner, Ernesto, carries on with his game. Three characters who are fleeing from the law, from everything, but principally from themselves arrive: Anabela, an ex-stripper; Mauricio and Julián, two hitmen.
Los Caminantes is a poetic piece filled with images of the end of the world where the characters do not have anything to lose; they have lived on the edge and the world where they inhabit offers nothing but desperation. Finally, there is no more conquest even though they decide to create a “new world”. A violent play filled with magic at the same time. Nature is also a character within the play, the maddening nature that questions all of our characters’ beliefs.
Los Caminantes talks about the loss of a mystical connection sense that our ancient people used to have. It talks about Mexico, in which violence reigns across the towns and roads. Within my Oaxacan imaginary context, I always return to speak about origins and memory. It’s vital for me as a creator to return and speak about the ancestral continuance in an apparently modern world. That’s the reason I conceived Los Caminantes as an itinerant, experimental, and moving project.
Premiered in Teatro del Bosque Julio Castillo, Centro Cultural del Bosque, Mexico City. October 14th, 2019.
